HTML5 Web Design! HTML, or Hyper Text Markup Language, has long been the core technology of the Internet, and through the years since it’s inception. And this has grown and improved to cater to the increasingly dynamic needs of the users today.

And now, with the introduction of its newest revision, called “HTML5”, it presents a new set of technologies to enrich the content served on the web.

And with most desktop browsers nowadays being able to support this new revision, work is now underway for it to be integrated into mobile/smartphone website design. The question is, are we ready for it?

HTML5 for Mobile Web Design Advantages

Integrating HTML5 into mobile desktop technology brings up a lot of advantages in it.

  • Cross Browser Website Designs : In particular, cross browser website designs would be easier to develop, as the standards imposed on it is shared by different mobile browsers. Thus ensuring that the websites you create will display correctly, no matter which browser is used in displaying it.
  • Control Over The Application-Design Process : In addition, for app creators, HTML5 technology eases up the method for creating apps, as it gives them better control of the application-design process. Thus allowing the app builders to truly implement their vision on their app. Read : Is HTML5 preferable to native apps?
  • Stream Media Without Plugins : However, the most striking feature of HTML5 is the ability for mobile browsers to stream embedded audio and video, without the use of external plugins like Flash, etc. This is made possible through the introduction of the “<video>” and “<audio>” tags, which has been one of the key features of HTML5 from the start. Indeed, HTML5 was under conception during the time that Web 2.0 technologies are starting to spring up.
  • Offline Support : Other features that HTML5 offers, are offline support, allowing apps to store some data on the device even if their internet connection is involved, as well as geolocation. Which lets you share your location to trusted websites of your choice.

The Challenges in HTML5 for Mobile Web Design

However, HTML5 in mobile web design still presents a few hurdles. In particular, uptake is slow, meaning if a website is designed using HTML, most mobile web browsers won’t be able to display the content inside it, simply because the browser isn’t compatible.

This is always an issue for any kind of technology which is fairly new, as HTML5 simply is still under development, and yet to be standardized for website design.

However, as the growing number of desktop browsers now support HTML5, and right now, more and more websites are using HTML5 in their design. In particular social networking websites and video/audio streaming, full support for mobile will surely be mandatory in the near future.

Looking Ahead

Despite it being a new technology, HTML is promising further to enhance the user’s web browsing experience through innovation. And even though there are still challenges involved in it’s uptake and implementation on mobile devices, it’s rarely even an issue, as in due time, it’ll be mandatory for mobile browsers to have full support.

So, while HTML5 looks very promising indeed, it’s not yet recommended for some designers to fully integrate it due to the rather slow uptake.
