Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – Android ICS Features

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest version of the popular mobile OS for tablets and smartphones, and it brings a lot of improvements, both on the outside and inside. The new version is quite a lot better than both Android 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.0 Honeycomb that were released before it, and if you have a dual core smartphone, you should get Ice Cream Sandwich as soon as the OTA update is available (although many carriers will most likely be late with it).

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

If you haven’t yet heard about Android 4.0, here are the most important things that it brings to the users and developers:

Android 4.0 Ice cream sandwich New Features

New Interface

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich brings a whole new interface to the user. It’s not that much different from the previous two versions, but it has a few noticeable changes. The home screen and lock screen have been revamped and now look cooler than ever.

The default theme is dark with mostly blue accents (as opposed to green on Gingerbread, for example), and the unified apps/favorites/widgets tray is easier to use than the separate functions on previous versions.

Better Multi-tasking

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich brings better multitasking support – you’ll be able to run multiple apps better than before and the OS is smarter at managing the ones in the background. Live previews are now also native to the OS, and developers can better integrate them into widgets and icons.

Better Text Input And Auto Correct

It seems that Google has learnt something from Blindtype, which looked amazing and was better than anything from competitors. The new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich keyboard has better text input accuracy and speed and a much better auto correct, with more settings that you can configure for your personal experience (if you make a lot of mistakes, setting autocorrect to “aggressive” will make the phone correct pretty much everything, and most of the times, it gets it right on the first try).

Better speech Recognition And More Voice Actions

With Siri out on iOS, Android definitely needs something to keep up, and while the Gingerbread version of Google’s Voice Actions was pretty good, it gets nowhere near the new version in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Your voice will now be better recognized, you can dictate whole documents without interruption and there’s a whole lot more that you can control with your voice – look for a demo to see what I’m talking about.

New Google Apps

Google’s Apps are an integral part of Android, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has got the newest versions pre-installed. Contacts, Browser, Calendar, Mail, Camera, Gallery and other essential apps have all been updated with the new interface and many awesome features that will come in handy.

For example, you have Live Effects for video in the Camera app, a new interface in Gallery that makes it easy to scroll through hundreds of pictures, better cloud and sync support in Calendar and more.

Several new, Unique Features

Among the new features, there are a few unique ones that deserve your attention.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich brings Android Beam for easy sharing between NFC devices (useful for business cards, contact info, authentication and more), Face Unlock for a quick and secure unlock and my favorite, WiFi Direct and Bluetooth HDP, both of which let you take full advantage of your WiFi and Bluetooth adapters and connect directly to other ICS smartphones, cameras, printers and computers for quick files and information transfer.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is definitely the best version of the OS to come out to date. The big thing about it is that it will work on both tablets and smartphones, bringing a more unified experience to users and better API handling for developers.

I highly recommend that you should update to android 4.0 ice cream sandwich

But if you can’t wait for the official update or it will never be available to you, you can check the various online forums for unofficial builds of ice cream sandwich which are just as good. Look at Top 4 Android Instant chat applications or 5 Cheap Android Phones 2012.
