The new device is in essence a scaled-up version of Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone (as the iPad is to the iPhone/iPod Touch). The Tab is powered by Google’s Android operating system — version 2.2, to be precise — with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface slapped on top.
It has a 7-inch TFT LCD screen, which is smaller than the iPad’s 9.7-inch display. The Samsung Galaxy Tab arrives in November, and the 7 inch Android 2.2 tablet certainly won’t be accused of lacking add-ons. Tony Cripps, Ovum principal analyst said “How well the Galaxy Tab sells will tell us a great deal about the likely future development of the still embryonic tablet market.” He also said that “It is perhaps the most credible Android alternative to the iPad launched so far – although an honorable mention must go to the smaller Dell Streak.”
